DIX, Harold Francis

Harold was a member of the First Contingent of the Kurrajongs. Born at Inverell, he was the eldest of seven children of Harold and Francis Dix of Long Plain, Inverell. He attended the Convent School at Inverell and sang in the Church Choir.

He was a 20 year old Compositor who had served a six year printing apprenticship at Inverell and also a member of the local Citizens Military Force prior to enlistment. He became a Private with the 33rd Battalion, A Company, which trained at Armidale and Rutherford prior to departing Australia in May 1916.

Harold's war was short. He transferred to the 1st Battalion and after training in England, went to France in September 1916. Tragically he was Killed in Action on 12 January 1917 in France. His personal effects, which included wallet, photos, metal watch and letters were returned to his Mother.

Private Harold Francis Dix was buried at Bulls Road Cemetery, Fleurs, France. His name is inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll, Inverell Cenotaph and the Long Plain Honor Roll. He was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade in 1919.
