NEWMAN, Claude Ernest Thomas

Claude was one of several children born to Alfred and Florence Newman. In November 1916, when he was twenty-one, Claude enlisted at Inverell NSW, stating he was born at Glen Innes, married and working as a Baker. He joined the 20th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A18 Wiltshire in February 1917. During further training in England, he was transferred to the 63rd Battalion and sent to France in August 1917. The following year he was transferred to the 34th Battalion and attended the Sniping School. Later in 1918 he was ill with influenza and after treatment returned to his unit. Claude returned to Australia in August 1919 and was discharged the following month due to the end of his enlistment period.

After the War, he returned to Inverell and his work as a Baker until his death in Sydney in 1935. Claude’s name is recorded on the Inverell Anglican Church Roll of Honour and the Inverell Intermediate High School Roll of Honour.
