WOLSELEY, Paul Stewart

Born in England about 1884, Paul came to Australia in 1913. He had been working as a Clerk in London at a large Drapery warehouse. When he enlisted at Randwick NSW in August 1914 he had a tobacco farm at Reville, Ashford, north of Inverell. He is believed to have been the first to enlist from Ashford. On his enlistment papers he stated he had served three years with the London Rifle Brigade. He had no family in Australia.

Paul became a Private with the AIF 2nd Battalion, B Company which sailed for Egypt on the transport ship Suffolk in October 1914. Upon arrival there his Battalion had further training. When the Australians landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, the 2nd Battalion was part of the second and third landings.

Private Paul Wolseley was killed in action on 2 May 1915 at Gallipoli. He has no known grave and his name is among the thousands of Australians commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial.

When Paul left Australia he made his friend Alan Roberts, Ashford Shire Engineer, the executor of his will which also named his English fiancee. His few remaining personal possessions were sent to Mr. Roberts.

Private Paul Stewart Wolseley has his name inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and the Cenotaph and the Ashford Honor Roll.
