MacDONALD, Godfrey Sampson

Godfrey, a son of John and Clara MacDonald, was born in the Inverell district in 1874. He married at Inverell in 1901 and lived at the property Killarney, Nullamanna. He served three and a half years with the 6th Light Horse and at the beginning of WW1 was drill instructor for the Nullamanna Rifle Club before enlisting at Inverell in August 1915. He was one of thirty-two recruits presented with the Inverell medal at a public farewell held in Inverell.

Godfrey joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A60 Aeneas in December 1915. After transfer to the 25th Howitzer Brigade he became ill and was sent to England in August 1916 where the decision was made to return him to Australia. He was medically discharged in July 1917 and returned to live at Nullamanna.

Godfrey’s name is recorded on the Inverell and Nullamanna Honor Rolls.
