DOUGLAS, Alfred

Alfred was born at Forest Gates, Essex, England. He was living at Bukkulla, north of Inverell when he enlisted in 1915, giving his age as twenty-two. He became a member of the 18th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement and left Australia for Egypt on HMAT A60 Aeneas on 20 December 1915. Six months later he was sent to France having been transferred to the 54th Battalion. During March 1917 Alfred was wounded in action, returned to England and admitted to Boscombe Military Hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to his buttocks. Several months later he re-joined his unit in France. A year later he was wounded again and sent back to England for treatment at Central Military Hospital at Weymouth. Two months later he re-joined his unit, only to be wounded in action a third time and invalided back to England.

Alfred retuned to Australia in March 1919 on the hospital ship City of Exeter and was medically discharged. After the war he ran the Bukkulla village store.
