JONES, George

George enlisted at Inverell in August 1916, stating he was a thirty-nine-year-old Grazier living at Skoomer, Ashford and that he was born at Marloes, Milford Haven, Wales, England. At the time of enlistment, he had a 900 acre grazing lease between Ashford and Graman. Prior to departure, he was one of twenty four men given a citizens farewell at Inverell Town Hall and presented with an Inverell medal and socks.

George, as a member of the 54th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement left Australia for England on HMAT A29 Suevic in November 1916. He later transferred to the 62nd Battalion and was stationed in camp in England. Due to ill health, he was returned to Australia in September 1917 and medically discharged. After his return he was given a ‘Welcome Home’ at Oakwood. 

George has his name recorded on the Ashford and Oakwood Honor Rolls.
