COLLINS, Alfred John Edward

Alfred was twenty three when he enlisted at Roma Queensland in December 1914, giving his address as Merion, Ashford NSW. He was a member of the Ashford Rifle Club.

Alfred joined the 5th Light Horse Regiment, 4th Reinforcement and, in April 1915, sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A15 Star of England. Four months later he was ill with influenza and transferred to England where he was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital. Early the next year he re-joined his unit and was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was wounded in action and sent to hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his back. After recovery, he attended a school of instruction at Zeitoun and in 1919 was promoted to Sergeant. Alfred returned to Australia in July 1919 and was medically discharged. He lived in the Texas, Queensland district and died in 1961.
