BAKER, Charles William

Charles was a son of Walter and Isabella Baker of ‘Fernlee’ Ashford NSW. In 1915. at the age of twenty, he enlisted at Inverell and was one of three volunteers officially farewelled at the Inverell Council Chambers before going into camp. At this function he was presented with the Inverell Medal and two pairs of socks.

Charles joined the 1st Light Horse Regiment, 14th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT RMS Osterley in January 1916. After serving with the British Expeditionary Force in Egypt he was transferred to France in June 1916. The following year he was unwell and sent to England for treatment at Southall. He remained in England for duty until returning to Australia in 1919 when he was medically discharged. Charles returned to the Ashford district for some years. He died in 1989. His name is inscribed on the Ashford Honor Roll.
