CARR-BOYD, Adair

Adair was born in 1886 at Glen Innes NSW to John and Rose Car-Boyd. He attended school at Inverell and in Sydney at The Kings School, Parramatta. His working life began when he learnt wool classing. He eventually became joint owner of a wool and skin buying business at Warialda. His interests included cricket, tennis, rugby union and horse racing.

When he enlisted in the AIF on 28 August 1914, he joined the 4th Battalion, E Company amd sailed from Sydney a few weeks later. Unfortunatley he became ill on the ship and at Albany was discharged medically unfit and returned to Sydney. Undaunted, he re-enlisted and departed with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 10 April 1915. Four days later he was promoted to Sergeant.

After reaching Egypt, his unit was sent to Gallipoli where he became ill with enteric fever and was evacuated to St Andrew's Hospital in Malta. Sergeant Adair Carr-Boyd, aged 29, died there on 30 July 1915.

Adair is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the town's Honor Roll and Cenotaph. In 1919 he was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade.
