CAMPBELL, Harold

As a serving member of the 5th Light Horse, Harold was one of the early volunteers for War service. Born at Hillgrove NSW in 1894, he was a well built, fair-haired, blue eyed twenty year old labourer when he left Inverell on 21 August 1914 to enlist in Sydney. Accompanying him were several other Inverell men who were photographed together and given a farewell at the Railway Station.

One month later, as a Private with the 1st Light Horse, Harold departed Australia on the ship HMAT Star of Victoria. He was killed in action at Pope's Hill, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915 and has no known grave. His name is recorded on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Private Harold Campbell is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the town's Honor Roll and Cenotaph. In 1919 he was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Avenue.

Known as 'Snowy' he had been a keen rugby union player before the War.
