MOY, Patrick Joseph

Patrick, the son of James and Catherine Moy, was born in the Raymond Terrace district NSW in 1885. He attended Nullamanna Public School north of Inverell and became a prominent Rugby Union player in the district. He was also a member of the Inverell Mounted Rifles for many years.

Described as 'a man of fine physique' Patrick served two and a half years at the Boer War. In 1901 he was mentioned in despatches and awarded a silver medal for his distinguished conduct in the field. After the outbreak of World War 1 Patrick, aged forty three years, enlisted in September 1914. Three months later, as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Light Horse Regiment 1st Reinforcement, he sailed from Sydney for Egypt on HMAT A42 Forty Two.

Lance Corporal Patrick Joseph Moy was killed in action on 16 May 1915 at Monash Valley and buried at Quinn's Post Cemetery, Gallipoli. At Inverell his name is inscribed on the town's Honor Roll and the Cenotaph. During 1919 he was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade at Inverell.
