SHERIDAN, William Owen

William enlisted under the name of Walter Mitchell in September 1914. At the time he was a twenty four year old Tile Layer from Croyden NSW and had married Elizabeth Frazer eariler that year. He had been a member of the cadets for six years and may have been working in the Inverell district when War was declared.

As a Private with the 1st Battalion, F Company, he sailed from Sydney on the transport ship A19 Afric on 18 October 1914. His Battalion served at Gallipoli where he was Killed in Action on 19 May 1915. Private William Sheridan has no known grave and his name is recorded on The Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

At Inverell, Private Sheridan's name is inscribed on the town's Honor Roll and Cenotaph. He is also one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade in 1919. A photograph of Private Sheridan was printed in the Sydney Morning Herald, with several others, under the heading Heroes of the Dardanelles.
