PEACOCKE, Gerald and Victor

Gerald was born in the Richmond River district of NSW. He had been working as a Station Hand in the Inverell District when he left on 25 August 1914 to enlist for War Service. He was a single man, aged twenty six and the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Reginald Peacocke of Inverell.

Upon enlistment he became a Private with the 1st Light Horse Regiment, A Squadron.  With a number of other Inverell Recruits, he sailed from Australia on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria. Gerald was Killed in Action near Popes Hill, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915 and has no known grave. His name is recorded at The Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

His brother, Victor, also enlisted in 1914 and served with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance 3rd Reinforcement. After being wounded at Gallipoli he was sent to hospital in England, then returned to Australia and medically discharged in 1916.

Private Gerald Fitzroy Peacocke is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the Honor Roll and Cenotaph. After the War he was one of the 215 men for whom a memorial tree was planted in Kurrajong Parade. The Inverell Honor Roll also records the name of Trooper Victor Peacocke as one of those who served during the War. In addition, both men have their names recorded on the Inverell Anglican Church Honour Roll.
