BACON, Cyril Hastings

Cyril was the youngest son of Francis Bacon of Sydney and Delungra NSW. He was educated at St. Igantius' College and Sydney Grammar School where he was involved with various sporting activities. At the time of his enlistment he was a twenty two year old Grazier, working with his brother at the property 'Yamala' Delungra.

Upon enlistement in November 1914 he became a Private with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, B Squadron which sailed from Sydney on 21 December 1914 on the transport ship A29 Suevic. He became ill at Gallipoli and was evacuated to London where he later underwent surgery for appendicitis. He died on 24 October and was buried at Wandsworth Cemetery, London.

Private Cyril Hastings Bacon is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the Cenotaph. His name is also recorded on the Delungra Honor Roll.

The Tamworth Daily Observer newspaper 30 October 1915 recorded

'... he was a splendid shot and horseman, and while in Egypt gained the reputation of being one of the crack riders of the regiment ...'
