WARBY, Charles Francis

Charles was one of four children born to his parents, William and Mary Warby.  His birth was registered at Inverell in 1880.  His father died just two years later and his mother remarried in 1883.  When Charles enlisted at Inverell in September 1915, he gave his occupation as Labourer.

He joined the 31st Battalion, 4th Reinforcement and whilst in camp in Australia he worked as a Cook. After training at Broadmeadow and Liverpool the Battalion left Australia on HMAT A68 Anchises in March 1916 and spent a short time in Egypt before being sent to France at the end of June 1916. 

Charles was Killed in Action on 21 July 1916, possibly at the Battle of Fromelles. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France. His Mother was granted a Pension of two pounds per fortnight from October 191

At Inverell, the name of Private Charles Warby is inscribed on the town’s World War 1 Honor Roll.
