OLLING, Lindsay John

Lindsay’s birth to Hainus and Lily Olling on 29 August 1894 was registered at Bundarra.  He was one of a large family who lived at Tingha where Lindsay worked as a Hairdresser.  At the age of twenty years and eight months he enlisted at Liverpool NSW and became a member of the 13th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement.  They sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A9 Shropshire in August 1915.

He served at Gallipoli from October 1915 until evacuated to Alexandria in December. During June 1916 he was transferred to France and just two months later was listed as Missing in Action.  His death on 11 August 1916 was confirmed by a Court of Inquiry in 1917.  As the 13th Battalion fought at Pozieres, it is likely this is where Lindsay was killed.

Private Olling has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.  At Tingha his name is recorded on the town’s War Memorial.
