SCOTT, John

John’s birth to Andrew and Mary Scott was registered at Nyngan NSW.  He was one of a large family who moved to live at Inverell.  John was a nineteen year old Labourer at Inverell when he enlisted at Liverpool NSW in July 1915.  He had been a member of the Senior Cadets prior to enlisting. He was one of several men given an official farewell at the Council Chambers and presented with the inscribed Inverell medal.

After joining the 4th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement, he sailed from Australia for Egypt on HMAT A17 Port Lincoln in October 1915.  During February 1916 he was transferred to the 53rd battalion and sent to France four months later.  Just three weeks later he was reported as missing at Pozieres, however it was over a year before a Court of Inquiry determined he had been killed in Action.  In 1921 his identity disc was returned to his Mother who was granted a pension of two pounds per fortnight.

Private John Scott is buried at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle d’Armentieres, France.

At Inverell his name is inscribed on the Honor Roll and Cenotaph.  During 1919 a memorial tree was planted in his memory in Kurrajong Parade.
