MORRIS, Walter Stanley Percy

Walter was a son of Richard and Mary Morris and lived at Mt Ena, Wallangra, north of Inverell. When he was twenty one Walter enlisted at Narrabri after having his medical examination at Inverell in March 1916.  A younger brother, Colin, had enlisted the previous month.

Walter joined the 36th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A30 Borda in October 1916.  Five months later he was sent to France where he was wounded in Action during the Battle of Messines.  He was transferred back to England for treatment of a gunshot wound to his thigh.

In October 1917 Walter returned to France. The following March he was wounded in action again and taken back to England with a shell wound. The decision was then made to return Walter to Australia and he arrived home in July 1918.

After the War he lived in the Inverell district where he died in 1976.

Private Walter Morris has his name inscribed on the Inverell and Wallangra Honor Rolls.
