TIGHE, Frederick and Edward Victor

Frederick and Edward were the sons of Edward and Rebecca Tighe of Willow Grove, Bukkulla, north of Inverell. The brothers were born at Inverell.

Frederick was a thirty three year old labourer working at Alpha, Queensland prior to enlisting in Brisbane on 11 August 1915. He was a member of the 25th Battalion 9th Reinforcement which sailed from Australia on HMAT Wandilla on 31 January 1916. He served in Egypt, joining the 39th Battalion at Heliopolis in April. In June he was sent to France and two weeks later promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 3 September 1916 and has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Edward was one of eleven men who departed Inverell on 21 August 1914 to enlist in Sydney. He had served eight years with the Light Horse unit at Inverell and was promoted to Sergeant. As a member of the 1st Light Horse Regiment, A Squadron, he sailed from Sydney on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria on 20 October 1914. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli where he died on 7 August 1915 having been promoted to Corporal only a few days earlier. As he has no known grave Edward's name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli, Turkey..

Both men have their names inscribed on the Inverell Honor Roll and Cenotaph and the Bukkulla Honor Roll.  In addition, memorial trees were planted for them in 1919 in Kurrajong Parade, Inverell.
