DIGHT, Harold Windeyer Cadell

Harold, the third son of John and Mary Dight of Yetman, was born in the Raymond Terrace district of NSW. He and his brothers grew up at Yetman until the family moved to the Casino district about 1904. Harold enlisted at Lismore NSW in October 1916. At this time he stated he was married, and gave his age as thirty seven and occupation as Estate Manager.

Harold joined the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 23rd Reinforcement. Prior to his departure he was entertained at a farewell function at Bungabbee Estate near Lismore where residents presented him with an inscribed gold watch and fountain pen.

He departed Australia for Egypt on the ship HMAT A42 Boorara in May 1917. Upon arrival at Suez he was ill with mumps and sent to hospital for three weeks. After rejoining his unit he fought at Beersheba where he became ill again. He suffered from malaria in 1918 before returning home and medically discharged in April 1919. Harold lived at Inglewood Qld where he died in 1949.

Harold’s brothers Herbert, Irving and John also served during World War 1.
