CAMPBELL, Archibald Duncan

Archibald, the son of Samuel and Annie Campbell, was born in 1891 near the town of Germanton NSW (later Holbrook). He attended Little Billabong Provisional School before coming to work as a Stationhand for the Ross family at their property Waranilla, Graman, north of Inverell.

He enlisted at Inverell on 13 September 1915, joining the 3rd Battalion, 15th Reinforcement and sailed from Sydney for Egypt on HMAT A15 Star of England on 8 March 1916. Three months after arriving in Egypt his unit was sent to France where after only two weeks in action on the Somme he was killed on 17 August 1916 at Pozieres. His younger brother Percy enlisted in 1916 and was a stretcher bearer when awarded the Military Medal in 1918 'for gallantry and devotion to duty.'

Private Archibald Campbell has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France. Locally, his name is recorded on the Graman and Inverell Honor Rolls.
