WRIGHT, Percy

Percy enlisted at Inverell on 4 August 1915 having previously served two and a half years in the Citizens Forces. He was born to Frank and Minnie Wirght in 1894 at Stanum, a mining village north of Glen Innes. Prior to enlisting he worked as a book keeper for Harry White of Inverell and was a keen Rugby Union player. It is believed he was engaged to be married when he went to the War.

With his good friend Private Albert Hewison, Percy joined the 3rd Battalion 14th Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. He served in France where he was killed in action on 17 August 1916 at Monquet Farm near Pozieres. He was in an old German observation post when a shell exploded and killed him instantaneously.

Private Percy Wright has no known grave and his name is among those inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France. He is remembered at Inverell where a memorial tree was planted for him in Kurrajong Parade and his name inscribed on the Honor Roll and Cenotaph.
